Hocker, howillia@umich.edu The Diocese of California's annual convention in 2007 overwhelmingly approved a resolution to enter into a companion relationship with the Diocese of Curitiba, Brazil. Bishop Andrus has recommended that the partnership be viewed through the lens of the MDGs. Bishop Naudal, the bishop of Curitiba, his wife and sister, (the first woman priest in South America) attended the Diocesan annual convention in October 2008. A group from the diocese of California has been invited to go to Curitiba in August 2009 The Department of World Mission offers financial support and encouragement of world mission work. Some programs in 2007/2008 are: 1.Two short term mission pilgrimages: One to Kenya and On to Uganda. 2. Assistance with medical insurance for a missionary in Cameroon. 3.Co-sponsor the Sabeel Conference held in Berkeley in August, 2007. 4. Grace Cathedral's Ministry of Presence and Education in Nicaragua. 5. Missionary to Liberia from our Global Mission Group. 6. Delegate from the Diocese of California to FOR's (Fellowship for Reconciliation) seventh peace delegation to Iran. Members of the Department meet four to five times a year with speakers and updates on global mission activity in the churches of the Diocese. The department members in collaboration with the new Companion Diocese Initiative produced a "Survey of Global Relationships of Churches Within the Diocese of California" for the October, 2007 Convention.
Michael Tedrick, one of the members of the diocese, will be going to Curitiba as a appointed missionary in the summer of 2009 to work with the bishop on the MDG's.
